Moving Doesn’t Take a Weekend—Here’s How Long It Really Takes

We’ve all seen the sitcom version: a couple throws everything into boxes and moves over the weekend. In real life, especially when you're downsizing from a long-time home, moving actually takes a lot longer.

At Downsizable, we encourage clients to give themselves adequate time ideally 6 to 12 weeks or more. Here's why:

1. Sorting Takes Time

Most homes contain decades’ worth of belongings. Sorting through furniture, paperwork, heirlooms, and keepsakes takes careful thought and often requires input from family members.

2. Packing Is Physical and Emotional

Packing isn’t just about boxes, it’s about decision-making. Every item carries meaning. That’s why we break the work into manageable sessions that are 3-4 hours long, so it’s not overwhelming.

3. Donation and Disposal Take Coordination

You can’t just throw everything in a dumpster. Donation pickups, consignment, junk removal, and recycling services all take adequate scheduling and lead time.

4. Downsizing Needs Strategy

If you’re moving into a smaller space, we’ll help create furniture layouts, measure storage, and ensure only what fits and functions makes the cut. We make a game plan for every move to ensure the client is properly prepared.

5. Unpacking and Settling In Matters

We don’t just move you, we also help you settle in. That includes unpacking, making the bed, organizing the kitchen, and making sure your new home feels like home.

Moving isn’t a weekend chore. It’s a project that deserves time, care, and support. With the right plan—and the right help—it can even be a positive, empowering experience.
